Prashar Lake Trek,The Vedic age sage who almost exterminated the Rākṣasas? And has a lake named after him.

Prashar Lake Trek History:

The story goes as follows that the sage in the limelight is no one but the great sage by the name of Parashara.  Parashara was the grandson of Vasishtha, the son of Śakti Maharṣi, and the father of Vyasa.

Parashara father Śakti Muni, was on a journey and came across an angry Rakshasa (demon) who had once been as the story goes a king but was cursed by Viśvamitra and as a result turned into a demon feeding on human flesh. The demon devoured Parashara’s father. Parashara at the intervention of his grandfather the great sage  Vashistha who is one of the Saptarishis (seven great Rishis) in the seventh, i.e. present Manvantara or age of Manu and one of the 10 Prajapatis.

After Parashara sired Vyasa(another sage) with  Matsyagandha, he proceeded into Parashara Tapas. One the places where Parashara was supposed to have meditated and has a lake named after him is Prashar Lake.

According to mythology the lake was created by Pandawas. When they were on their way after Mahabharata with Deity Kamrunag after whom the Kamru Valley is named after to find best place for their teacher, Dev Kamrunag on their search for a pristine and isolated place, they stumbled upon Kamru valley, Dev Kamrunag loved the isolation of this place so much that he decided to stay here for the rest of his life.On his request, one of the Pandava brothers, who was Bheem as he was the strongest of them all, formed the lake by thrusting his elbow and forearm on the mountain. And that is the reason believed by locals after elliptical-shaped lake with depth unknown. And named it after the sage Parashara.

Surrounded by the Dhauladhar ranges in Kullu Valley , Prashar Lake trek lies 49 km north of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, India, there is also a temple in the design of a pagoda dedicated to the sage Prashar. The lake is located at a height of 2730 m above mean sea level. With deep blue waters, the lake is held sacred to the sage Prashar. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and looking down on you can see the river Beas flowing swiftly, the lake can be approached via Drang. The pagoda - like temple was built in the thirteenth century and legend has it was built by a baby from a single tree.


According to locals and care-takers of the Prashar Lake, the lake itself is a representation of the earth. Because upon further inspection what looks like a lake at first glance, consists of 79% or water and 21% of dry area which actually represents the structure of earth. A floating  island represents the earth, which revolves on its own axis which changes its position around the lake according to the prevalent season. According to the pandits, movement of this island unto a certain place has a prediction and in which itself is a matter of study and research.

They further inform that moving of the island to absolute North corner is a sign of bad omen. They further apprise that, they think that if the floating island is sunk it will mean the end of life on the planet earth as we know it to exist.

Prashar Lake Trek Climate:

The weather there is unpredictable, rain and snow might fall  any time due to the dense forest area. In winters due to heavy snowfall the lake freezes and is charm to watch. The area is almost cut off from the rest of  world for some month due to heavy snowfall.

How to reach and access Prashar Lake Trek :

The nearest place to Prashar lake trek is Baggi village , which is near the town of Mandi, you can reach Mandi via bus or your own conveyance, after which there is another 26 kms worth of travel by road to Baggi village.

  • Reach Mandi from Delhi. If you are not native to Delhi, reach Delhi first then leave for Mandi, through a car or take a bus whichever is      feasible.
  •  On reaching Mandi , take a little rest , and then leave for Baggi village.
  •  From Baggi  village it is nearly 4 to 5 hours trek , through forest and scenic beauty.
  •  On reaching Prashar Lake , take into the view and beauty of nature at its finest and true and raw self.
  •  Take a little rest and then explore the area. There is a pagoda- like temple near the lake, made by the erstwhile ruler of the area.
  •   Enjoy your time beside a bonfire and with the fun and laughter of your dear and near one.

Who can do the prashar lake trek ?

The trek in itself is not difficult if you compare with other trek like the Triund Trek or the Leh Laddak trek

The trek is very easy and could done by any person of good health irrespective of age. Beginners to trekking can trek on this route and can adapt themselves to the rigors of a trek. Think it like a stepping stone towards future treks, which are much harder in nature and terrain when compared to the Prashar lake trek.

It is advisable that you stay there for a couple of days – to explore the serenity around and take in the awesomeness of the place.

There is a guest house operated by the PWD department and also there is another guest house operated by the Forest department that is at a walking distance of about say 300 to 400 metres from the lake. The view from the guest houses is magnificent, resplendent, transcendent .

Both of the guest houses has caretakers to provide basic facilities along with cooking.

    Best Time to Visit Prashar Lake:

    It is advisable not to visit Prashar lake trek in the winter season as it snows heavily there and the trekking route could be blocked with snow, plus the area is also cut off from fresh supply of essential commodities, so if by any chance any natural calamities occur, it could turn for the worse if you are not fully prepared especially in the winter season. It is best to visit the area all throughout the year instead of the rainy and winter season.

    Prashar Lake Trek Tips:

    It would ideal that you book your rooms in advance as it is difficult to get a room then and there itself.

    Keep a set of warm clothes handy as the temperature fluctuates rapidly. Also keep an extra set of clothes of both summer and winter clothing. And carry common medical supplies, which is a must and is life saving if you are trekking to Prashar lake.

    If your are travelling by your own personal vehicle it's advisable to fill your fuel tanks with enough petrol at Mandi or Kullu, as there is no petrol pump in the hilly areas especially in and around Prashar lake trek.
